The universe is increasing 9% faster than thought, according to a new study. Astronomers studying data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have revealed the surprising fact. Usually, the technique to measure the stars is extremely time-consuming. It is because the Hubble telescope can only notice one star for every one-and-a-half-hour orbit around Earth. Scientists used a new approach to have a glance at special types of stars residing in Earth’s neighbouring galaxy. They used those stars to measure distances across the universe. Scientists often used the technique to enhance the calculations of the Hubble constant. Eventually, the results show how fast the cosmos is growing over time.

Scientists used the DASH (Dash and Shift) method, which uses the telescope as a point-to-shoot camera to observe groups of Cepheids. The technique enabled the team to study dozens of bright and dim stars. The process took the same range of time it would normally take to notice a single star. The revised expansion rate is faster than estimations of the universe’s movement shortly after the Big Bang. Scientists functioning on the latest study say there is a less probability that gap is not by chance. Notably, the figures are down from 1 in 3,000 to only 1 in 100,000.

The Astrophysical Journal has accepted the study for publication. Adam Riess, study’s author, says the Hubble pull between previous and current universe is probably the most amazing development in cosmology in decades. The gap has grown, and now reached a point that is impossible to neglect. Adam says this variation could not probably take place just by chance. Adam Riess is a professor of physics and astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and is leading a project, the SHOES, the team that worked on the study. At the moment, there is no explanation for the variation, but scientists point towards scenarios involving concealed dark matter or dark energy. But there is a need to use new theories and new physics to know the reason behind the evolution of the universe.
